The 1868 Abyssinian Military Expedition
2018 was the 150th anniversary of the British 1868 Expedition to Abyssinia to rescue the British Consul from an ‘impregnable’ 10,000 foot mountain fortress at Magdala. It involved a march of 400 miles south across unknown trackless mountainous terrain.
In 2011, John and Rosamund Macfarlane and two companions followed the route from northern Ethiopia to the Aroji battlefield and the Magdala massif. The remoteness of the area and the friendliness of the people, allowed a privileged glimpse of their hard rural way of life.
